The Initial Appointment

Some people may find it uncomfortable to begin the first conversation with a therapist, while others are eager to start. If you are concerned about beginning therapy, it may help to know a little about what happens in the first therapy session.

When I meet with you for the first time, I’ll invite you to share your concerns and identify what it is you would like to work on in therapy. If you have been in therapy before, we can also discuss what you liked or didn’t like about your experience. I want you to feel free to talk openly about any hopes or fears you have about therapy. I also want you to move at your own pace, sharing what you want, when you want. We can start where you are comfortable. During our first meeting, my goal is to provide you with feedback and help you make a plan for how to move forward.

In the case of children or adolescents, I will typically meet with parents first to learn about their specific concerns regarding their child or adolescent. In this first session, I will also ask about their child’s or adolescent’s development, including aspects related to social-emotional growth, physical health and academic experiences. Then, I will meet with the child or adolescent to understand his or her perspective and concerns, determine how therapy can be helpful and work to establish goals and next steps.
